Two days later, Teagan was still in search of Ramirez, watching the entire media circus continue to implode about the missing tech analyst. After running his phone number and offshore account through databases, they had one option that came up as a potential lead. In Cuba, Ramirez was reported to be hiding out when the second part of his funds were cut off from being distributed. Spider and Teagan came up with a plan to send in their own intelligence agents to apprehend him while they worked on cleaning up the mess Fenton left behind.

Teagan turned the volume up on the TV in her office.

“This smells like a cover up to me, Jonathan,” Sandra from Channel Seven News stated.

“No word from the White House about Ambassador Fenton,” Jonathan replied.

“What are the odds of an attack on our technology and internet services? Plus, our ambassador to Spain is missing.” Sandra looked into the camera.

“From what our sources say at National News, it’s something to do with the creator of the software, Christian Hawkins,” Jonathan said.

“Fuck!” Teagan blew out a breath and tossed the remote on her desk as Spider knocked on the door and stepped inside.

“You have to stop watching that crap. All those news shows are the same.”

“They just named Christian now.”

“Think it was that newspaper guy?”

“No one else knew.”

“Need us to handle him?”

“No, that will only cause more problems. I’ll talk with him. Did you get anything about Ramirez yet?”

Spider passed a file to Teagan, and she flipped it open, showing a dead Ramirez.

“What happened to him?” Teagan looked up at Spider.

“He returned fire.”

“Is that the truth or something to make the president feel good to say to the media?”

“It wasn’t my call, Teagan. Since it wasn’t our own people, we couldn’t demand the steps to bring him back to the States.”

“That’s bullshit, Spider.”

“Look, I know you’re under pressure, but you have to make these calls, or other people will make them for you.”

“I wanted to be different. We can’t go around killing people.” Teagan jumped up and walked to the window in her office.

“Our jobs at the end of the day are to protect an oath we took.”

“Even if that means destroying the foundation of what the country was built on?”

“Stanton wasn’t all wrong.”

“He was a traitor to the agency and blinded by greed.”

“They’re all like that, Teagan. You have blood on your hands just as much.”

“I never asked for this!” Teagan waved her hand around.

“But you didn’t turn it away either,” Spider barked back.

“You’ve always told me the truth.” Teagan turned and faced him.

“Are your memories slowly coming back?”

“Some. I remember my first interrogation with Dillion Houston. Plus, meeting Diablo and pretending to be into Art,” Teagan chortled.

“Call Christian and spend some time with your family.”

“I will once this gets settled.”

“You’ve done your job, Teagan. You no longer have to carry the burdens of your past.”

“Why do I feel like this will never end?”

“Our lives are the agency; only you decided to strike out and have some sort of normalcy, but it never ends like that.
